Mr. Zachor has practiced law in the State of Washington since 1975 having attended University of Oregon Law School and Gonzaga University Law School. He played football and baseball for and graduated from Oregon State University with a Bachelor of Science. He also has attended University of Maryland, working for his Master’s Degree in Economics and the Universita’di Pavia in Pavia, Italy. He served five (5) years in the United States Air Force as an interpreter (French) during the Viet Nam war and was assigned to the National Security Agency. During that period, he was an airborne interpreter on an RC-135, attending survival, prisoner of war, and interrogation school. He also attended the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, California, studying French and Italian languages. Rather than continue with the National Security Agency, he returned to law school at Gonzaga University.

In 1991, he began prosecuting for the City of Mountlake Terrace, and was conflict prosecutor for the City of Lynnwood from 1992. He is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, Snohomish County Bar Association, Association of Police Legal Advisor's, National College of District Attorneys (domestic violence emphasis), Washington Women’s Lawyers (Snohomish County Chapter) and has been admitted to practice before all Federal Courts including the United State Supreme Court.

Melanie Thomas Dane - Partner

Melanie was hired by Judge Goodwin and Mr. Zachor. She commenced prosecuting for their firm in December, 2002 in Lynnwood and other cities. She had previously served as prosecutor for the City of Lynnwood as a “Rule 9” (a third year law student authorized to practice law by the Washington State Bar Association under supervision). Prior to that she was a Rule 9 intern for the City of Bellingham and worked as a civil litigator for the firm of Sanchez, Paulson, Mitchell, and Schock. Melanie is an extremely proficient prosecutor, well respected by judges, court staffs, police officers and her peers. She is the past president of the Snohomish County Branch of the Washington Women’s Lawyer Association and past SnoCo WWL State Liaison. She was on the board of the Washington Chapter of the NWPC, has been a KCBA and Snohomish County( SCBA) Bar Member, served as a Trustee for SCBA, assisted with the planning for a Mental Health court in Snohomish County, volunteered for the HJP in King County, served as a commissioner to the Seattle Women's Commission and serves as a Judge Pro Tempore for King County District Court and Seattle Municipal Court. She is also appointed special prosecutor for the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office. She served as the Judge for the City of Black Diamond from 2012-2017. During her service as Judge she served on various Judicial Committee’s, was elected to the DMCJA Board and was selected to teach at Judicial College.

Her noted accomplishments as an attorney include numerous motions, jury trial, and appellate victories on behalf of the Cities she serves. Lynnwood’s Judge Moore, himself an experienced prosecutor, has lauded her preparedness, court room decorum and ability to go head-to-head with experienced defense lawyers. She is an articulate orator and a skilled legal writer as evidenced by her successful record in the Snohomish County Superior Court and Washington Court of Appeals and the Washington State Supreme Court, in defending appeals against the various cities.

She serves as the managing prosecutor in firm's day to day operations. She supervises new Rule 9 attorneys as well as mentors student in a pre-law undergraduate program. She was instrumental in the formation of the firm Zachor & Thomas, Inc., P.S., and serves as a partner and corporate secretary. She has contributed valuable ideas to the courts adding to their efficiency.

Jim attended Thomas Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan, graduating cum laude. He has worked for Zachor & Thomas since 2007 as a legal assistant, as a RULE 9 and now as an attorney. His tenaciousness in pursuing criminal prosecution has been noted by defense attorneys and judges. With his competitive nature and temperament for fairness and justice, he demands accountability from the defendants he prosecutes. Jim graduated from Mountlake Terrace High School with honors and was named to the Washington All State Baseball team. He attended Oregon State University and was on the varsity baseball team as a freshman. He transferred to Pacific University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts with honors and was named to the Northwest All Conference Baseball team.

The police departments he works with have rated him “outstanding” in assisting them with their legal knowledge and training.

Jim lives with his wife in Snohomish County.

Crystal L. Fry (Part Time Attorney)

Ms. Fry is a graduate of Western Washington University, where she majored in Interdisciplinary Child Development. While at WWU she received various scholarships from Masonic Organizations. She was a first grade teacher for five years before attending law school. Ms. Fry is also a graduate of Seattle University School of Law. She is a recipient of the 2008 King County Washington Women Lawyers scholarship, and was a member of Seattle University’s Washington Women Lawyers organization.

Ms. Fry was a Rule 9 Intern for the Washington Education Association as well as a Rule 9 Intern for the law offices of Kenyon Disend. Prior to her employment at Zachor & Thomas, Ms. Fry interned for the Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office, as well as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Family Support Division. She has been employed with Zachor Thomas since November 2010, and enjoys focusing on Domestic Violence cases.

Ms. Fry resides in Bothell with her husband and daughter. She enjoys gardening, reading and spending time with her family.

Erin M. Ortega , Office Manager & Legal Assistant for Cities of Lynnwood, Mill Creek, Edmonds, Mukilteo, and County In Custody matters.

Currently the office manager and legal assistant for the Cities of Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mill Creek, Mukilteo, and all cases handled in custody at the Snohomish County jail. Erin joined the firm in March, 2004, having graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Central Washington State University in law enforcement. She had been employed by the law firm of Feldman & Lee, P.S. for five years. The Feldman firm has the City of Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Mill Creek, Arlington and Woodway contracts for public defense. She is experienced in legal research and dealing with the variety of issues associated with a law firm which deals with criminal law.

She is extremely knowledgeable in dealing with court staffs, the Department of Licensing, SNOCOM, SNOPAC, defendants, and pro-se defendants, victims, witnesses and law enforcement personnel. She knows how to secure necessary documents and respond to demands from defense attorneys. Her performance is exceptional and a true credit to every successful prosecution. She knows the law and court rules as well as many attorneys.
